Itinerary

Your adventure begins with pickup from your Heraklion hotel in the morning. Head out of the city in rugged all-terrain vehicles along coastal roads and into the Cretan mountains, stopping first at scenic overlooks and rural villages. Visit the foothills of the Afendi Mountains and see remnants of an ancient Roman aqueduct near the Aposelemis Basin, then continue along off-road paths toward the Lassithi Plateau with panoramic views over fertile valleys. Along the way, enjoy demonstrations of traditional shepherd life, including tasting local cheese and raki at a shepherd’s mitato (mountain hut). A highlight is the stop at Dikteon Cave, famous in Greek mythology as a possible birthplace of Zeus (entrance fee optional), before a village tavern lunch with generous portions of local Cretan dishes and wine. In the afternoon the tour visits Lassinthos Eco Park and the traditional village of Seli, with free time to browse and observe village life, then passes the ancient Krassi Tree before returning to Heraklion in the late afternoon.

Who is this experience best for

This off-road adventure is ideal for travellers who want to experience Crete’s interior landscapes, history, and local culture beyond the typical seaside attractions. It suits outdoor enthusiasts, history and mythology lovers intrigued by legendary Greek sites like Dikteon Cave, and anyone who enjoys small-group adventures with authentic local food and storytelling. Because of the terrain and vehicle type, it is most appropriate for people comfortable with bumpy roads and moderate physical activity throughout the day.

Insider notes

The Zeus cave entrance can be steep and requires good balance, so consider whether you want to climb the steps before you go (entry fee is not included unless specifically selected). Weather and road conditions may affect the exact route and sequence of stops to ensure comfort and safety. Photography opportunities are abundant, especially on the Lassithi Plateau and along mountain passes, so bring a camera and sun protection. Comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for outdoor terrain will enhance your comfort during village walks and short hikes.
