Storm Daniel Floods: What Happened

In early September 2023, Storm Daniel struck Greece, causing the most severe flooding in the country's recorded history. Between 4 and 7 September, the storm brought extreme, record-breaking rainfall to Thessaly, in central Greece, and the area around Volos and the Pelion peninsula. Some areas received more rain in a day than they would normally receive in a year. Rivers burst their banks, and large parts of the Thessaly plain, Greece's most important agricultural region, were flooded, with villages cut off and residents rescued from rooftops by helicopters and boats. Seventeen people died in Greece. Roads, bridges and railway lines were destroyed. Tens of thousands of livestock drowned, and huge areas of farmland, crops and irrigation systems were ruined, with serious effects on Greek agriculture and food production for years. The ancient Lake Karla, which had been drained in the 1960s, temporarily reappeared. The floods came just weeks after major wildfires. After leaving Greece, Storm Daniel moved on to Libya, where it caused catastrophic floods in the city of Derna, killing thousands of people.
