Getting from Agios Efstratios to Kalamata

If you are heading to Kalamata from Agios Efstratios you are making your way from a small island in the northern Aegean to the capital of Messenia in the southern Peloponnese, on the opposite side of Greece. It has a renovated waterfront, good food and easy access to the Mani peninsula and the Byzantine ruins of Mystras.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Agios Efstratios to Kalamata. Kalamata has only very limited seasonal port connections with no link to the northern Aegean ferry network. Getting there means taking the ferry from Agios Efstratios to Lemnos, flying to Athens and then either flying to Kalamata or driving south through the Peloponnese, which takes around 3 to 3.5 hours from Athens.

Getting there by air

Kalamata has an international airport with connections from Athens. Taking the ferry from Agios Efstratios to Lemnos, flying to Athens and then Athens to Kalamata gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Agios Efstratios to Lemnos and fly to Kalamata via Athens. It is the fastest and most practical approach. If you are traveling with a car, fly to Athens, rent a car and drive south through the Peloponnese to Kalamata via the E65 motorway through Corinth and Tripoli.
