Getting from Agios Efstratios to Katerini

If you are heading to Katerini from Agios Efstratios you are making your way from a small island in the northern Aegean to a city at the foot of Mount Olympus on the Pierian coast of northern Greece, with the mountain rising steeply behind it and the beaches of the Pieria coast below.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Agios Efstratios to Katerini. Katerini is a mainland city with no ferry connection. The most practical approach is to take the direct ferry from Agios Efstratios to Kavala, which runs 3 to 4 times a week and takes around 6 to 7 hours, and then drive or take the bus southwest to Katerini, which takes around 1 hour 30 minutes from Kavala.

Getting there by air

Katerini has no airport. The nearest airports are Thessaloniki, around 70 kilometres to the north, and Kavala, around 70 kilometres to the northeast. Taking the ferry from Agios Efstratios to Lemnos, which takes around 1 hour 30 minutes, and then flying directly to Thessaloniki is the fastest approach. From Thessaloniki the drive to Katerini takes around 1 hour via the E75 motorway.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Agios Efstratios to Lemnos and fly directly to Thessaloniki, then take the bus or drive south to Katerini. The direct Lemnos to Thessaloniki flight avoids Athens entirely. Alternatively, take the direct ferry from Agios Efstratios to Kavala and drive or take the bus to Katerini from there. If you are traveling with a car, the ferry to Kavala puts you on the mainland with your vehicle ready to drive southwest to Katerini.
