Getting from Agios Efstratios to Samothrace

If you are heading to Samothrace from Agios Efstratios you are making your way to one of the wildest and most remote islands in Greece, rising dramatically from the northeastern Aegean close to the Bulgarian and Turkish borders, with Mount Fengari at its centre and the Sanctuary of the Great Gods where the Winged Victory of Samothrace was discovered in 1863.

Take the ferry

There is a direct ferry from Agios Efstratios to Samothrace running once a week, taking around 4 hours 20 to 50 minutes. It is a limited service so check the schedule carefully and build your travel dates around the available departure. Samothrace is also connected to Lemnos three times a week, so an alternative is to take the ferry from Agios Efstratios to Lemnos and then connect to Samothrace from there.

Getting there by air

Samothrace has no airport. The nearest airport is Alexandroupoli. Taking the ferry from Agios Efstratios to Lemnos, flying to Athens and then Athens to Alexandroupoli, followed by the ferry to Samothrace taking around 1 hour 45 minutes, gives a total journey time of around 6 to 7 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the direct weekly ferry from Agios Efstratios to Samothrace when the schedule works for your dates. It is the most practical approach and keeps the journey within the northern Aegean without going through Athens. If the timing does not align, take the ferry from Agios Efstratios to Lemnos and connect to Samothrace from there. Samothrace rewards at least three or four nights. Bring good walking shoes and come prepared.
