Getting from Agios Efstratios to Volos

If you are heading to Volos from Agios Efstratios you are making your way from one of the most isolated islands in the northern Aegean to a city on the Pagasetic Gulf at the foot of the Pelion peninsula in Thessaly. It is the departure point for ferries to the Sporades and has a long waterfront lined with ouzo bars and seafood restaurants.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Agios Efstratios to Volos. Getting there means taking the ferry from Agios Efstratios to Lemnos, which runs 4 times a week in summer and takes around 1 hour 30 minutes, and then either flying to Athens and driving north to Volos, or flying to Thessaloniki and driving south to Volos. The drive from Athens to Volos takes around 3 to 3.5 hours and from Thessaloniki around 2 hours.

Getting there by air

Agios Efstratios has no airport. The nearest airport is Lemnos. Taking the ferry from Agios Efstratios to Lemnos and flying to Athens, then driving or taking the KTEL bus to Volos gives a total journey time of around 6 to 7 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Agios Efstratios to Lemnos, fly to Athens and drive or take the KTEL bus to Volos. The KTEL bus from Athens runs several times daily and takes around 3.5 hours. If you are traveling with a car, fly to Athens, rent a car and drive north to Volos via the E75 motorway.
