Getting from Agistri to Karpathos

If you are heading to Karpathos from Agistri you are making your way from a small pine-covered island in the Saronic Gulf to a long mountainous island in the southern Dodecanese, on the opposite side of Greece. It has a strong local culture and the extraordinary village of Olympos in the north where centuries-old customs are still very much alive.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Agistri to Karpathos. Getting there means taking the Saronic ferry from Agistri to Piraeus, which takes around 55 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes, and then boarding the Piraeus to Karpathos ferry, which runs around 3 times a week and takes around 13 to 20 hours depending on the route and vessel. The total journey by sea takes the better part of two days.

Getting there by air

Karpathos has its own airport with connections from Athens. Taking the Saronic ferry from Agistri to Piraeus, the metro to Athens Airport and flying to Karpathos takes around 1 hour 15 minutes in the air. Total travel time is around 4 to 5 hours and is the most practical approach for most travelers. Alternatively, fly to Rhodes and take the local ferry from Rhodes to Karpathos, which takes around 3 to 4 hours.

Your best option

Take the Saronic ferry from Agistri to Piraeus and fly to Karpathos via Athens. It is the fastest and most practical approach. If you are traveling with a car, take the Saronic ferry from Agistri to Piraeus and board the overnight Piraeus to Karpathos ferry, which takes your vehicle directly to the island.
