Getting from Agistri to Nisyros
If you are heading to Nisyros from Agistri you are making your way from a small pine-covered island in the Saronic Gulf to one of the most geologically dramatic islands in the Dodecanese group, on the opposite side of Greece. The entire island sits inside a volcanic caldera and the crater at Stefanos is one of the most accessible volcanic landscapes in Europe.
Take the ferry
There is no direct ferry from Agistri to Nisyros. Getting there means taking the Saronic ferry from Agistri to Piraeus, which takes around 55 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes, and then flying to Kos from Athens Airport, followed by the local ferry from Kos to Nisyros taking around 1 to 1.5 hours. Alternatively, take the Piraeus to Nisyros ferry from Athens, which runs 2 to 3 times a week and takes around 13 to 17 hours. The total journey by sea alone takes the better part of two days.
Getting there by air
Nisyros has no airport. The nearest airport is Kos. Taking the Saronic ferry from Agistri to Piraeus, the metro to Athens Airport and flying to Kos, followed by the local ferry from Kos to Nisyros, gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.
Your best option
Take the Saronic ferry from Agistri to Piraeus, fly to Kos and take the local ferry across to Nisyros. It is the most practical approach by a significant margin. Check the Kos to Nisyros schedule before booking your flights as the service does not run daily. If you are traveling with a car, take the Saronic ferry from Agistri to Piraeus and board the overnight Piraeus to Nisyros ferry, which takes your vehicle.
