Getting from Alexandroupoli to Amorgos

If you are heading to Amorgos from Alexandroupoli you are making your way from the far northeastern corner of Greece to the most eastern of the Cyclades, on the opposite side of the Aegean. It has dramatic cliffs, the extraordinary Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa built into the cliff face above the sea and an atmosphere that rewards those who make the effort to get there.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Alexandroupoli to Amorgos. Alexandroupoli's ferry connections are limited to Samothrace, Lemnos, Agios Efstratios and Lavrio. Getting to Amorgos by sea means flying to Athens first and then taking the Piraeus to Amorgos ferry, which runs daily in summer and takes around 5 to 9 hours depending on the vessel. Amorgos has two ports, Katapola and Aegiali, so check which port your ferry arrives at before booking accommodation as the road between them takes around 30 minutes.

Getting there by air

Amorgos has no airport. The nearest airports are Naxos and Santorini. Flying from Alexandroupoli to Athens and then Athens to Naxos, followed by the ferry to Amorgos taking around 2 to 3 hours, gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours.

Your best option

Fly from Alexandroupoli to Athens and take the Piraeus to Amorgos ferry. Give Amorgos at least three nights. The island opens up slowly and rewards those who stay long enough to find its rhythm. If you are traveling with a car, drive from Alexandroupoli to Piraeus and board the conventional Piraeus to Amorgos ferry, which takes your vehicle directly to the island.
