Getting from Alexandroupoli to Naxos

If you are heading to Naxos from Alexandroupoli you are making your way from the far northeastern corner of Greece to the largest island in the Cyclades, on the opposite side of the country. It has a medieval Venetian town above the port, long sandy beaches on the west coast and a mountainous interior of marble villages.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Alexandroupoli to Naaxos. Alexandroupoli's ferry connections are limited to Samothrace, Lemnos, Agios Efstratios and Lavrio. Getting to Naxos by sea means traveling to Piraeus first and boarding the Piraeus to Naxos ferry, which runs up to 7 daily departures in summer and takes around 3.5 to 5.5 hours. The total journey by sea takes the better part of a day.

Getting there by air

Alexandroupoli has its own airport with connections from Athens. Naxos has its own small airport with connections from Athens. Flying from Alexandroupoli to Athens and then Athens to Naxos takes around 40 to 45 minutes on the second leg. Total travel time door to door is around 4 to 5 hours.

Your best option

Fly from Alexandroupoli to Athens and then either fly to Naxos or take the Piraeus to Naxos ferry. The ferry from Piraeus delivers you directly to Naxos Town port and is often more practical than the short flight when you factor in airport transfers. If you are traveling with a car, drive from Alexandroupoli to Piraeus and board the conventional Piraeus to Naxos ferry, which takes your vehicle directly to the island.
