Getting from Astakos to Aegina

If you are heading to Aegina from Astakos you are making your way from a port town on the western coast of central Greece to the closest major island to Athens, in the Saronic Gulf. It has the best preserved ancient Greek temple in the country at Afaia, a thriving pistachio industry and a waterfront that fills up with Athenians every weekend.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Astakos to Aegina. Astakos ferry connections are limited to Kefalonia and Ithaca. Getting to Aegina means driving from Astakos to Athens, which takes around 3.5 hours, and then taking the Saronic ferry from Piraeus to Aegina, which takes around 40 minutes on the fast boat and around 1 hour 20 minutes on the conventional ferry, with over 40 daily departures in summer.

Getting there by air

Aegina has no airport. The nearest airport is Athens. Astakos has no airport either. Driving from Astakos to Athens and taking the Saronic ferry from Piraeus to Aegina gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Drive from Astakos to Athens and take the Saronic ferry from Piraeus to Aegina. With over 40 daily departures in summer you never need to book the Piraeus to Aegina connection in advance. If you are traveling with a car, drive from Astakos to Athens and continue to Piraeus for the conventional ferry across to Aegina.
