Getting from Astakos to Alexandroupoli

If you are heading to Alexandroupoli from Astakos you are making your way from a port town on the western coast of central Greece to the far northeastern corner of the country, a city on the Thracian coast close to the Turkish border and the gateway to Samothrace.

Drive from Astakos northeast via Ioannina and the Egnatia motorway to Alexandroupoli. It avoids Athens entirely and is the most direct road connection across northern Greece. At around 5.5 to 6 hours it is a long but scenic drive. If you are planning to visit Samothrace from Alexandroupoli, ferries depart daily in summer and take around 1 hour 45 minutes. If you prefer to fly, drive to Athens and fly to Alexandroupoli.
