Getting from Astakos to Igoumenitsa

If you are heading to Igoumenitsa from Astakos you are making your way from a port town on the western coast of central Greece to another port city on the Epirus coast in the far northwest, the main departure point for ferries to Corfu, Paxos and Italy. The two are on the same western Greek coast making this one of the more natural connections from Astakos.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Astakos to Igoumenitsa. Astakos ferry connections are limited to Kefalonia and Ithaca. Getting to Igoumenitsa means driving north from Astakos via Arta and Ioannina, which takes around 2.5 to 3 hours. It is a straightforward road journey up the western coast of Greece that avoids Athens entirely.

Getting there by air

Igoumenitsa has no airport. The nearest airport is Ioannina, around 83 kilometres to the east. Astakos has no airport either. Driving from Astakos north to Igoumenitsa via Arta and Ioannina is considerably more practical than flying for this mainland connection and takes around 2.5 to 3 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Drive from Astakos north to Igoumenitsa via Arta and Ioannina. At around 2.5 to 3 hours it is one of the most direct connections from Astakos on the western Greek mainland and avoids Athens entirely. From Igoumenitsa you can take ferries to Corfu, Paxos and Italy, making it a useful gateway for onward Ionian travel.
