Getting from Astakos to Poros

If you are heading to Poros from Astakos you are making your way from a port town on the western coast of central Greece to a small island in the Saronic Gulf, on the opposite side of the country. Poros sits just 200 metres from the Peloponnese mainland and the narrow channel between them creates one of the most charming harbour settings in Greece.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Astakos to Poros. Astakos ferry connections are limited to Kefalonia and Ithaca. Getting to Poros means driving from Astakos to Athens, which takes around 3.5 hours, and then taking the Saronic ferry from Piraeus to Poros, which takes around 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes with several daily departures. Alternatively drive to Galatas on the Peloponnese coast, around 3 to 3.5 hours from Astakos via Patras and Corinth, and take the short local ferry across to Poros, which takes only a few minutes and runs constantly throughout the day.

Getting there by air

Poros has no airport. The nearest airport is Athens. Astakos has no airport either. Driving from Astakos to Athens and taking the Saronic ferry from Piraeus to Poros gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Drive from Astakos to Athens and take the Saronic ferry from Piraeus to Poros. It is the most practical approach. If you are traveling with a car, drive from Astakos to Galatas on the Peloponnese coast and take the short local ferry across to Poros, which avoids Athens entirely and is the most direct route.
