Getting from Astakos to Volos

If you are heading to Volos from Astakos you are making your way from a port town on the western coast of central Greece to a city on the Pagasetic Gulf at the foot of the Pelion peninsula in Thessaly. It is the departure point for ferries to the Sporades and has a long waterfront lined with ouzo bars and seafood restaurants.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Astakos to Volos. Astakos ferry connections are limited to Kefalonia and Ithaca. Getting to Volos means driving from Astakos northeast via Agrinio and the E65 motorway to Volos, which takes around 3.5 to 4 hours. It is a straightforward road journey across central Greece that avoids Athens entirely.

Getting there by air

Volos has a small airport at Nea Anchialos, around 20 kilometres from the city, with limited connections from Athens. Astakos has no airport either. Driving from Astakos to Volos via the E65 motorway is considerably more practical than flying for this mainland connection and avoids Athens entirely.

Your best option

Drive from Astakos northeast to Volos via Agrinio and the E65 motorway. At around 3.5 to 4 hours it is a direct and scenic route across central Greece that avoids Athens entirely. If you are planning to take the ferry to the Sporades from Volos, the port has connections to Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos with multiple departures daily in summer.
