Getting from Chania to Alonissos
If you are heading to Alonissos from Chania you are making your way from the most intimate of Crete's three main cities to the most remote of the Sporades group, in the northern Aegean. It has a densely forested coastline, a beautifully preserved old village above the port and a marine park that protects the largest colony of Mediterranean monk seals in Europe.
Getting there by air
Alonissos has no airport. The nearest airport is Skiathos, with connections from Athens. Chania has an international airport with connections from Athens. Flying from Chania to Athens and then Athens to Skiathos, followed by the ferry from Skiathos to Alonissos taking around 1 to 2 hours, gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.
Take the ferry
There is no direct ferry from Chania to Alonissos. Getting there by sea means taking the overnight ferry from Chania to Piraeus, which takes around 8 to 9 hours, and then driving to Volos or Mantoudi for the ferry to Alonissos. Note that as of 2026 there are no departures from Agios Konstantinos to Alonissos. The total journey takes the better part of two days.
Your best option
Fly from Chania to Athens and then fly to Skiathos and take the ferry across to Alonissos. It is the most practical approach. If you are traveling with a car, take the overnight ferry from Chania to Piraeus and drive to Volos or Mantoudi for the ferry to Alonissos from there.
