Getting from Chania to Fournoi
If you are heading to Fournoi from Chania you are making your way from the most intimate of Crete's three main cities to a cluster of small fishing islands between Ikaria and Samos in the eastern Aegean, on the opposite side of Greece. It has excellent seafood, quiet beaches and almost no tourist infrastructure.
Take the ferry
There is a seasonal direct ferry from Chania to Samos running in summer on the wider Blue Star route, and from Samos the local ferry to Fournoi takes under 1 hour and runs daily in summer. Alternatively take the overnight ferry from Chania to Piraeus and then fly to Samos or Ikaria, followed by the local ferry to Fournoi. This keeps the final leg within the eastern Aegean and avoids a long onward journey from Athens.
Getting there by air
Fournoi has no airport. The nearest airports are Samos and Ikaria, both with connections from Athens. Chania has an international airport with connections from Athens. Flying from Chania to Athens and then Athens to Samos, followed by the local ferry to Fournoi, gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.
Your best option
Fly from Chania to Athens and then fly to Samos and take the local ferry across to Fournoi. It is the most practical approach. Give yourself at least two nights on Fournoi and come prepared as facilities on the island are limited. If you prefer to travel by sea, check whether the seasonal direct ferry from Chania to Samos aligns with your dates as it avoids Athens entirely.
