Getting from Chania to Piraeus

If you are heading to Piraeus from Chania you are making your way from the most intimate of Crete's three main cities to the largest port in Greece and the gateway to Athens and the wider ferry network.

Take the ferry

There is a direct overnight ferry from Chania to Piraeus running every day throughout the year, departing from Souda port around 9pm and arriving in Piraeus in the early morning after around 8 to 9 hours. It is one of the most well established ferry connections in Greece and runs year-round with cabins available. From Piraeus the metro takes around 20 minutes to central Athens. In summer there are also daytime departures on some days.

Getting there by air

Piraeus has no airport. The nearest airport is Athens International, around 45 kilometres to the east. Chania has an international airport with connections from Athens. Flying from Chania to Athens and then taking the metro or taxi to Piraeus, which takes around 20 to 45 minutes from Athens Airport, gives a total journey time of around 3 to 4 hours and is considerably faster than the overnight ferry.

Your best option

Take the overnight ferry from Chania to Piraeus if you are not in a hurry or are traveling with a car. It departs in the evening, saves a night's accommodation and delivers you to the port in the morning ready to connect to the rest of the network. If speed matters, fly from Chania to Athens and take the metro or taxi to Piraeus. If you are traveling with a car the overnight ferry is the only realistic option as it takes your vehicle directly to the port.
