Getting from Chania to Tinos

If you are heading to Tinos from Chania you are making your way from the most intimate of Crete's three main cities to an island in the central Cyclades, to the north. It has the most venerated pilgrimage church in Greece and a tradition of extraordinary marble craftsmanship in its interior villages.

Take the ferry

There is a seasonal direct ferry from Chania to Tinos running in summer on the wider Blue Star route that connects Crete with the northern Cyclades. The service runs a limited number of times per week and takes many hours with stops along the way. The more practical approach is to take the overnight ferry from Chania to Piraeus and then the ferry from Rafina to Tinos, which runs up to 12 times daily in summer and takes around 2 hours. Rafina is around 25 kilometres from Athens Airport making it a convenient connection without crossing the city to Piraeus.

Getting there by air

Tinos has no airport. The nearest airport is Mykonos. Chania has an international airport with connections from Athens. Flying from Chania to Athens and then Athens to Mykonos, followed by the short ferry from Mykonos to Tinos taking around 30 minutes, gives a total journey time of around 4 to 5 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Fly from Chania to Athens and take the ferry from Rafina to Tinos. Rafina is a short taxi ride from Athens Airport and avoids crossing the city entirely. If you are traveling with a car, take the overnight ferry from Chania to Piraeus and board the conventional Piraeus to Tinos ferry, which takes your vehicle directly to the port.
