Getting from Symi to Evia
If you are heading to Evia from Symi you are making your way from one of the most beautiful harbour towns in the Dodecanese to the second largest island in Greece, connected to the mainland by road bridges and within easy reach of Athens. It has varied landscapes from forested mountains in the north to sandy beaches in the south.
Take the ferry
There is no direct ferry from Symi to Evia. Getting there means taking the ferry from Symi to Rhodes, which takes around 50 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes and runs multiple times daily, and then flying from Rhodes to Athens and crossing to Evia via the bridge at Halkida, around 90 kilometres from central Athens, or taking the short ferry from Rafina to Marmari in southern Evia, which takes around 1 hour and runs several times daily. Rafina is just 20 kilometres from Athens Airport making it a particularly convenient connection.
Getting there by air
Evia has no commercial airport. The nearest airport is Athens. Symi has no airport. The nearest airport is Rhodes. Taking the ferry from Symi to Rhodes, flying from Rhodes to Athens and then crossing to Evia via the bridge at Halkida or the short ferry from Rafina to Marmari gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.
Your best option
Take the ferry from Symi to Rhodes and fly from Rhodes to Athens, then cross to Evia via the short ferry from Rafina to Marmari or the bridge at Halkida. The Rafina to Marmari ferry is particularly convenient as Rafina sits just 20 kilometres from Athens Airport. Note that Symi is car-free so if you are traveling with a car it would already be in Rhodes, from where you can board the overnight Piraeus ferry in reverse and drive to whichever part of Evia suits your plans.
