Getting from Symi to Thassos
If you are heading to Thassos from Symi you are making your way from one of the most beautiful harbour towns in the Dodecanese to the northernmost island in Greece, in the northern Aegean close to the Macedonian coast, on the opposite side of the country. It is green and forested with good beaches and ancient ruins from one of the most prosperous cities of the ancient Greek world.
Take the ferry
There is no direct ferry from Symi to Thassos. Thassos is connected only to Kavala and Keramoti on the northern mainland. Getting there means taking the ferry from Symi to Rhodes, which takes around 50 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes and runs multiple times daily, and then flying from Rhodes to Athens and then Athens to Kavala, followed by the ferry across to Thassos taking around 1 hour 30 minutes and running almost hourly in summer.
Getting there by air
Thassos has no airport. The nearest airport is Kavala. Symi has no airport. The nearest airport is Rhodes. Taking the ferry from Symi to Rhodes, flying from Rhodes to Athens and then Athens to Kavala, followed by the ferry across to Thassos, gives a total journey time of around 6 to 7 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.
Your best option
Take the ferry from Symi to Rhodes and fly from Rhodes to Athens, then fly from Athens to Kavala and take the ferry across to Thassos. With ferries running almost hourly from Kavala in summer you rarely need to book the final crossing in advance. If you are traveling with a car, take the ferry from Symi to Rhodes and board the overnight Piraeus to Kavala route via the E75 motorway after arriving at Piraeus, then take the ferry across to Thassos.
