Getting from Syros to Alexandroupoli
If you are heading to Alexandroupoli from Syros you are making your way from the capital of the Cyclades to the far northeastern corner of Greece, a city on the Thracian coast close to the Turkish border and the gateway to Samothrace, on the opposite side of the country.
Take the ferry
There is no direct ferry from Syros to Alexandroupoli. Getting there means taking the ferry from Syros to Piraeus, which runs up to 6 daily crossings in summer and takes around 2 hours on the fast boat, and then either flying from Athens to Alexandroupoli or driving northeast via the E75 and Egnatia motorways, which takes around 8 to 9 hours from Athens.
Getting there by air
Alexandroupoli has its own airport with connections from Athens. Syros has a small domestic airport with limited connections from Athens. Taking the ferry from Syros to Piraeus, flying from Athens to Alexandroupoli takes around 1 hour 10 minutes on the second leg. Total journey time is around 5 to 6 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.
Your best option
Take the ferry from Syros to Piraeus and fly from Athens to Alexandroupoli. It is the fastest and most practical approach. If you are planning to visit Samothrace from Alexandroupoli, ferries depart daily in summer and take around 1 hour 45 minutes. If you are traveling with a car, take the ferry from Syros to Piraeus and drive northeast via the E75 and Egnatia motorways to Alexandroupoli.
