Getting from Syros to Athens
If you are heading to Athens from Syros you are making your way from the capital of the Cyclades to the capital of Greece and the gateway to everything it connects to.
Take the ferry
There is a direct ferry from Syros to Piraeus running up to 6 times daily in summer, taking around 2 hours on the fast boat and around 3.5 to 4 hours on the conventional ferry. It is one of the most well served Cyclades to Athens connections given Syros's position as the administrative capital of the island group. From Piraeus the metro takes around 20 minutes to central Athens. Alternatively take the direct ferry from Syros to Rafina, which runs several times daily in summer and takes around 3 to 4 hours, arriving just 20 kilometres from Athens Airport.
Getting there by air
Syros has a small domestic airport with limited connections from Athens. The direct ferry to Piraeus or Rafina is considerably more practical than flying for this connection given the frequency and convenience of the sea route.
Your best option
Take the direct ferry from Syros to Piraeus for central Athens and Piraeus connections, or the direct ferry to Rafina if you need to be near Athens Airport. With up to 6 daily departures to Piraeus in summer you never need to book far in advance. If you are traveling with a car the conventional ferry takes your vehicle directly to whichever port suits your onward journey best.
