Getting from Syros to Evia
If you are heading to Evia from Syros you are making your way from the capital of the Cyclades to the second largest island in Greece, connected to the mainland by road bridges and within easy reach of Athens. It has varied landscapes from forested mountains in the north to sandy beaches in the south.
Take the ferry
There is a particularly natural connection from Syros to Evia given that Rafina, one of the main ferry ports for Syros, sits just across the water from southern Evia. Taking the direct ferry from Syros to Rafina, which runs several times daily in summer and takes around 3 to 4 hours, and then taking the short ferry from Marmari in southern Evia across from Rafina, or crossing the bridge at Halkida from the mainland, gives a total journey time of around 4 to 5 hours. This avoids Piraeus and central Athens entirely.
Getting there by air
Evia has no commercial airport. The nearest airport is Athens. Syros has a small domestic airport with limited connections from Athens. Taking the direct ferry from Syros to Rafina and then crossing to Evia gives a total journey time of around 4 to 5 hours and avoids Athens entirely. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.
Your best option
Take the direct ferry from Syros to Rafina and then cross to Evia either via the short Marmari ferry or by driving to Halkida for the bridge crossing. It avoids Piraeus and central Athens entirely and is the most natural and direct approach. If you are heading to northern Evia, drive from Rafina to Arkitsa and take the short ferry to Loutra Edipsou, which takes around 30 minutes. If you are traveling with a car the conventional ferry from Syros takes your vehicle directly to Rafina.
