Getting from Syros to Oinousses
If you are heading to Oinousses from Syros you are making your way from the capital of the Cyclades to a small cluster of islands just off the northeastern coast of Chios in the northeastern Aegean, on the opposite side of Greece. It has a naval tradition that produced a disproportionate share of Greece's great shipping dynasties and almost no tourist infrastructure.
Take the ferry
There is no direct ferry from Syros to Oinousses. Oinousses is accessible only via Chios, with a daily local ferry from Chios main port taking around 1 hour. Getting there means taking the ferry from Syros to Piraeus, which runs up to 6 daily crossings in summer and takes around 2 hours on the fast boat, and then flying from Athens to Chios, followed by the local ferry across to Oinousses. Alternatively take the overnight Piraeus to Chios ferry, which runs around 3 times a week and takes around 9 hours, and then the local ferry to Oinousses.
Getting there by air
Oinousses has no airport. The nearest airport is Chios. Syros has a small domestic airport with limited connections from Athens. Taking the ferry from Syros to Piraeus and flying from Athens to Chios, followed by the local ferry to Oinousses, gives a total journey time of around 6 to 7 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.
Your best option
Take the ferry from Syros to Piraeus and fly from Athens to Chios, then take the local ferry across to Oinousses. Check the daily ferry schedule from Chios before booking your flights and plan your Chios arrival around the afternoon departure. Give yourself at least two nights on Oinousses and bring everything you need with you. If you are traveling with a car, take the ferry from Syros to Piraeus and drive to the overnight Piraeus to Chios ferry, which takes your vehicle and arrives in the morning.
