Getting from Telendos to Astakos

If you are heading to Astakos from Telendos you are making your way from a tiny car-free island off the western coast of Kalymnos in the Dodecanese to a port town on the western coast of central Greece, on the opposite side of the country. Astakos sits on a quiet bay surrounded by hills and is the departure point for ferries to Kefalonia and Ithaca.

Take the ferry

Getting there means taking the local boat from Telendos to Myrties on Kalymnos, which takes around 5 minutes, and then either flying from Kalymnos to Athens and driving or taking the KTEL bus northwest to Astakos, which takes around 3.5 to 4 hours from Athens via the E65 motorway and Agrinio, or taking the overnight ferry from Kalymnos port at Pothia to Piraeus and then driving northwest to Astakos.

Your best option

Take the local boat from Telendos to Myrties and fly from Kalymnos to Athens, then drive or take the KTEL bus northwest to Astakos via the E65 motorway and Agrinio. Having a car makes this route considerably more practical. From Astakos you have ferry connections to Kefalonia and Ithaca making it a useful hub if you are continuing your journey into the Ionian islands. If you are traveling with a car, note that no cars are permitted on Telendos so your vehicle would already be on Kalymnos, from where you can take the overnight ferry to Piraeus and drive northwest to Astakos.
