Getting from Telendos to Skyros

If you are heading to Skyros from Telendos you are making your way from a tiny car-free island off the western coast of Kalymnos in the Dodecanese to the most remote of the Sporades group, in the northern Aegean. It has two completely different landscapes, a dramatic hilltop Chora and a wild volcanic south, with its own native horse breed and one of the most extraordinary carnival traditions in Greece.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Telendos to Skyros. The two islands are in different island groups with no sea connection between them. Getting there means taking the local boat from Telendos to Myrties on Kalymnos, which takes around 5 minutes, and then making your way to Kalymnos port at Pothia for the ferry north through the Dodecanese network. Skyros is connected to the mainland only via Kymi on the eastern coast of Evia, so reaching it requires flying from Kos or Kalymnos to Athens and then flying or driving to Kymi for the Kymi to Skyros ferry, which takes around 1 hour 40 minutes and runs 2 to 3 times daily.

Getting there by air

Skyros has its own small airport with connections from Athens running around twice a week. Telendos has no airport. The nearest airports are Kalymnos and Kos. Taking the local boat from Telendos to Myrties, transferring to Kalymnos port and flying from Kalymnos to Athens and then Athens to Skyros gives a total journey time of around 6 to 7 hours. Check the Athens to Skyros schedule carefully as the service runs a limited number of times per week. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the local boat from Telendos to Myrties and fly from Kalymnos to Athens, then fly from Athens to Skyros. Check the schedule carefully as both the Kalymnos to Athens and Athens to Skyros services run a limited number of times per week and need to be coordinated carefully. If you are traveling with a car, note that no cars are permitted on Telendos so your vehicle would already be on Kalymnos, from where you can drive to Piraeus and then to Kymi for the ferry across to Skyros.
