Getting from Thassos to Kavala

If you are heading to Kavala from Thassos you are making your way from the northernmost island in Greece to the closest mainland port, a city on the Macedonian coast with a Byzantine castle above the harbour, a Roman aqueduct running through the upper town and the archaeological site of Philippi just 15 kilometres inland. It is also the main ferry gateway to and from Thassos making it one of the most natural and effortless connections from the island.

Take the ferry

There is a direct ferry from Thassos to Kavala running almost hourly in summer from both Thassos Town and Prinos, taking around 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes depending on the departure point. It is the primary connection from Thassos to the wider Greek mainland network and one of the most frequent island to mainland ferry connections in Greece. The service runs year-round with reduced frequency in winter.

Getting there by air

Kavala has its own airport around 30 kilometres from the city. Thassos has no airport. The direct ferry is considerably more practical than flying for this short connection given the crossing time and frequency of the service.
