Getting from Thessaloniki to Alonissos
If you are heading to Alonissos from Thessaloniki you are making your way from the second largest city in Greece to the most remote of the Sporades group, in the northern Aegean, relatively close in geographic terms given both sit in the northern part of Greece. It has a densely forested coastline, a beautifully preserved old village above the port and a marine park that protects the largest colony of Mediterranean monk seals in Europe.
Getting there by air
Alonissos has no airport. The nearest airport is Skiathos, with connections from Athens and seasonal direct flights from Thessaloniki. Flying from Thessaloniki to Skiathos and then taking the ferry from Skiathos to Alonissos, which takes around 1 to 2 hours, gives a total journey time of around 3 to 4 hours when the direct service is running. Check the Thessaloniki to Skiathos schedule as direct flights are seasonal.
Take the train, bus or drive
Thessaloniki is connected to Volos by road, taking around 2.5 hours via the E75 motorway. From Volos the direct ferry to Alonissos runs daily in summer, stopping at Skiathos and Skopelos along the way, and takes around 4 to 5 hours. This is the most natural and direct approach at around 6.5 to 7.5 hours total and avoids Athens entirely. Note that as of 2026 there are no departures from Agios Konstantinos to Alonissos.
Take the ferry
There is no direct ferry from Thessaloniki to Alonissos. Getting there by sea means driving to Volos or Mantoudi for the ferry to Alonissos. From Thessaloniki the drive to Volos takes around 2.5 hours and the ferry to Alonissos runs daily in summer.
Your best option
Drive from Thessaloniki to Volos and take the direct ferry across to Alonissos. It avoids Athens entirely and is the most natural approach at around 6.5 to 7.5 hours total. If you prefer to fly, fly from Thessaloniki to Skiathos when the direct seasonal service is running and take the ferry across to Alonissos. If you are traveling with a car, the Volos ferry takes your vehicle directly to Alonissos port.
