Getting from Volos to Alonissos

If you are heading to Alonissos from Volos you are making your way from the main mainland departure point for the Sporades to the most remote island in the same group, just a short distance away across the water. It has a densely forested coastline, a beautifully preserved old village above the port and a marine park that protects the largest colony of Mediterranean monk seals in Europe.

Take the ferry

There is a direct ferry from Volos to Alonissos running daily in summer, taking around 4 to 5 hours. It is the most natural and direct connection from Volos and keeps the journey entirely within the Sporades network without going through Athens. The service runs year-round with reduced frequency in winter. Volos is the main gateway to the Sporades and the connection to Alonissos is well established, typically stopping at Skiathos and Skopelos along the way.

Getting there by air

Alonissos has no airport. The nearest airport is Skiathos, with connections from Athens. Volos has a small airport at Nea Anchialos with limited connections from Athens. Flying from Volos to Athens and then Athens to Skiathos, followed by the short ferry from Skiathos to Alonissos taking around 1 to 2 hours, gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours and is considerably less practical than the direct ferry from Volos port.

Your best option

Take the direct ferry from Volos to Alonissos. It is the most natural and direct connection and keeps the journey entirely within the Sporades network. Check the schedule before traveling as departure times vary by season and the ferry typically stops at Skiathos and Skopelos along the way. If you are traveling with a car, the conventional ferry from Volos takes your vehicle directly to Alonissos port.
