Getting from Volos to Amorgos
If you are heading to Amorgos from Volos you are making your way from a city on the Pagasetic Gulf at the foot of the Pelion peninsula to the most eastern of the Cyclades, on the opposite side of the Aegean. It has dramatic cliffs, the extraordinary Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa built into the cliff face above the sea and an atmosphere that rewards those who make the effort to get there.
Take the ferry
There is no direct ferry from Volos to Amorgos. Volos is the main departure point for the Sporades group and has no connection to the Cyclades ferry network. Getting there by sea means driving from Volos to Piraeus, which takes around 3 to 3.5 hours via the E75 motorway, and then boarding the Piraeus to Amorgos ferry, which runs daily in summer and takes around 5 to 9 hours depending on the vessel. Amorgos has two ports, Katapola and Aegiali, so check which port your ferry arrives at before booking accommodation as the road between them takes around 30 minutes.
Getting there by air
Amorgos has no airport. The nearest airports are Naxos and Santorini. Volos has a small airport at Nea Anchialos with limited connections from Athens. Driving from Volos to Piraeus and boarding the Piraeus to Amorgos ferry gives a total journey time of around 8 to 12 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.
Your best option
Drive from Volos to Piraeus and board the Piraeus to Amorgos ferry. The drive from Volos to Piraeus takes around 3 to 3.5 hours via the E75 motorway. Give Amorgos at least three nights. The island opens up slowly and rewards those who stay long enough to find its rhythm. If you are traveling with a car, the conventional ferry from Piraeus takes your vehicle directly to the island.
