Getting from Volos to Andros

If you are heading to Andros from Volos you are making your way from a city on the Pagasetic Gulf at the foot of the Pelion peninsula to the northernmost island in the Cyclades, on the opposite side of the Aegean. It has neoclassical mansions, an art museum of genuinely international quality and a network of old footpaths connecting the villages.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Volos to Andros. Andros is served primarily from Rafina on the northeastern Attica coast. Getting there means driving from Volos to Rafina, which takes around 3.5 to 4 hours via the E75 motorway and Athens ring road, and then taking the ferry to Andros, which runs up to 11 times daily in summer and takes around 1 to 2 hours. Rafina is around 25 kilometres from Athens Airport making it a convenient connection that avoids Piraeus entirely.

Getting there by air

Andros has no airport. The nearest airport is Athens. Volos has a small airport at Nea Anchialos with limited connections from Athens. Driving from Volos to Rafina and taking the ferry to Andros gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours and avoids Athens entirely. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Drive from Volos to Rafina and take the ferry across to Andros. Rafina is a short drive from Athens Airport and avoids crossing the city to Piraeus entirely. At around 5 to 6 hours total it is the most natural and direct approach. If you are traveling with a car, the conventional ferry from Rafina takes your vehicle directly to Andros port.
