Getting from Volos to Fournoi
If you are heading to Fournoi from Volos you are making your way from a city on the Pagasetic Gulf at the foot of the Pelion peninsula to a cluster of small fishing islands between Ikaria and Samos in the eastern Aegean, on the opposite side of Greece. It has excellent seafood, quiet beaches and almost no tourist infrastructure.
Take the ferry
There is no direct ferry from Volos to Fournoi. Volos is the main departure point for the Sporades group and has no connection to the eastern Aegean ferry network. Getting there by sea means driving from Volos to Piraeus, which takes around 3 to 3.5 hours via the E75 motorway, and then boarding the overnight Piraeus to Samos ferry, followed by the local ferry to Fournoi, which takes under 1 hour from Samos and runs daily in summer. Alternatively drive to Athens and fly to Samos or Ikaria and take the local ferry to Fournoi from either island.
Getting there by air
Fournoi has no airport. The nearest airports are Samos and Ikaria, both with connections from Athens. Volos has a small airport at Nea Anchialos with limited connections from Athens. Driving from Volos to Athens and flying from Athens to Samos, followed by the local ferry to Fournoi, gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.
Your best option
Drive from Volos to Athens and fly from Athens to Samos, then take the local ferry across to Fournoi. It is the most practical approach. Give yourself at least two nights on Fournoi and come prepared as facilities on the island are limited. If you are traveling with a car, drive to Piraeus for the overnight Piraeus to Samos ferry, which takes your vehicle directly to the island.
