Getting from Volos to Kavala

If you are heading to Kavala from Volos you are making your way from a city on the Pagasetic Gulf at the foot of the Pelion peninsula to a port city in northern Greece on the Macedonian coast, with a Byzantine castle above the harbour, a Roman aqueduct running through the upper town and the archaeological site of Philippi just 15 kilometres inland, relatively close in geographic terms given both sit in the northern part of Greece.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Volos to Kavala. Both are mainland cities connected only by road. Getting there means driving from Volos northeast via the E75 motorway to Kavala, which takes around 2.5 to 3 hours. This is one of the most natural and direct road connections from Volos given the shared northern Greek geography of the two cities and avoids Athens entirely.

Getting there by air

Kavala has its own airport with connections from Athens. Volos has a small airport at Nea Anchialos with limited connections from Athens. Driving from Volos northeast to Kavala via the E75 motorway gives a total journey time of around 2.5 to 3 hours and avoids Athens entirely. Kavala Airport is around 30 kilometres from the city so factor in a taxi on arrival. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Drive from Volos northeast via the E75 motorway to Kavala. At around 2.5 to 3 hours it avoids Athens entirely and is the most direct and natural road approach. Having a car makes this route effortless. If you are planning to visit Thassos from Kavala, ferries to the island run almost hourly in summer and the crossing takes around 1 hour 30 minutes.
