Getting from Volos to Kea
If you are heading to Kea from Volos you are making your way from a city on the Pagasetic Gulf at the foot of the Pelion peninsula to the closest Cycladic island to Athens, on the opposite side of the Aegean. It has good beaches, a quiet Chora and an ancient stone lion carved into the hillside that is one of the more unusual monuments in the Cyclades.
Take the ferry
There is no direct ferry from Volos to Kea. Kea is served exclusively from Lavrio on the southeastern Attica coast. Getting there means driving from Volos to Lavrio, which takes around 3.5 to 4 hours via the E75 motorway and Athens ring road, and then taking the ferry to Kea, which takes around 1 hour and runs up to 7 times daily in summer. Lavrio is around 30 minutes from Athens Airport making it a convenient connection that avoids crossing the city to Piraeus entirely.
Getting there by air
Kea has no airport. The nearest airport is Athens International, around 30 kilometres from Lavrio. Volos has a small airport at Nea Anchialos with limited connections from Athens. Driving from Volos to Lavrio and taking the ferry to Kea gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.
Your best option
Drive from Volos to Lavrio and take the ferry across to Kea. At around 5 to 6 hours total it is the most natural and direct approach and avoids crossing Athens to Piraeus entirely. If you are traveling with a car, the ferry from Lavrio takes your vehicle directly to Kea port.
