Getting from Volos to Kefalonia

If you are heading to Kefalonia from Volos you are making your way from a city on the Pagasetic Gulf at the foot of the Pelion peninsula to the largest of the Ionian islands, on the opposite side of Greece. It is mountainous with dramatic cliffs, turquoise bays and some of the finest beaches in Greece.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Volos to Kefalonia. No mainland Aegean port is connected by sea directly to any Ionian island. Getting there means driving from Volos west across central Greece to Astakos for the ferry to Kefalonia via Ithaca, or continuing to Kyllini on the northwestern Peloponnese coast for the direct ferry to Kefalonia, which takes around 1 hour 30 minutes and runs up to 4 daily crossings. The drive from Volos to Kyllini takes around 5 to 5.5 hours via Athens and Corinth, or around 5 hours via Trikala, Agrinio and Patras, avoiding Athens entirely.

Getting there by air

Kefalonia has an international airport with connections from Athens. Volos has a small airport at Nea Anchialos with limited connections from Athens. Driving from Volos to Athens and flying from Athens to Kefalonia takes around 45 minutes on the second leg. Total journey time is around 4 to 5 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Drive from Volos to Athens and fly from Athens to Kefalonia. It is the fastest and most practical approach. If you are traveling with a car, drive west via Trikala, Agrinio and Patras to Kyllini for the ferry across to Kefalonia, which avoids Athens entirely and takes around 6.5 to 7 hours from Volos including the ferry.
