Getting from Volos to Kythnos

If you are heading to Kythnos from Volos you are making your way from a city on the Pagasetic Gulf at the foot of the Pelion peninsula to an island in the western Cyclades, on the opposite side of the Aegean. It has over 60 beaches and a medieval village at Driopida that hardly anyone outside Greece knows about.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Volos to Kythnos. Kythnos is served primarily from Lavrio on the southeastern Attica coast. Getting there means driving from Volos to Lavrio, which takes around 3.5 to 4 hours via the E75 motorway and Athens ring road, and then taking the ferry to Kythnos, which takes around 1 hour 10 minutes and runs up to 5 times daily in summer. Lavrio is around 30 minutes from Athens Airport making it a convenient connection that avoids crossing the city to Piraeus.

Getting there by air

Kythnos has no airport. The nearest airport is Athens. Volos has a small airport at Nea Anchialos with limited connections from Athens. Driving from Volos to Lavrio and taking the ferry to Kythnos gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours and avoids Athens entirely. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Drive from Volos to Lavrio and take the ferry across to Kythnos. The proximity of Lavrio to Athens Airport makes it a convenient connection that avoids crossing the city to Piraeus entirely. At around 5 to 6 hours total it is the most natural and direct approach. If you are traveling with a car, the ferry from Lavrio takes your vehicle directly to Kythnos port.
