Getting from Volos to Meteora
If you are heading to Meteora from Volos you are making your way from a city on the Pagasetic Gulf at the foot of the Pelion peninsula to one of the most extraordinary places in Greece, a complex of Byzantine monasteries built on top of rock pillars in the plain of Thessaly in central Greece, remarkably close in geographic terms given both sit in the same region of Thessaly.
Take the ferry
There is no ferry to Meteora. It is an inland destination with no sea connection. Getting there from Volos means driving west across the Thessalian plain to Kalambaka, the town at the base of the Meteora rocks, which takes around 1.5 to 2 hours via Trikala. This is one of the most natural and direct connections from Volos given the shared Thessalian geography of the two and avoids Athens entirely.
Getting there by air
Meteora has no airport. The nearest town is Kalambaka, around 1.5 to 2 hours by road from Volos. Note that as of 2026 the direct train service between Athens and Kalambaka remains suspended due to track damage. Volos has a small airport at Nea Anchialos with limited connections from Athens. Driving from Volos west to Kalambaka via Trikala is considerably more practical than flying for this short connection.
Your best option
Drive from Volos west to Kalambaka via Trikala. At around 1.5 to 2 hours it is one of the most effortless connections from Volos and avoids Athens entirely. The drive across the Thessalian plain with the Meteora rocks appearing on the horizon as you approach Kalambaka is a memorable one. Plan at least two nights in Kalambaka as the monasteries and viewpoints deserve more than a rushed visit.
