Getting from Volos to Mykonos
If you are heading to Mykonos from Volos you are making your way from a city on the Pagasetic Gulf at the foot of the Pelion peninsula to the most cosmopolitan island in the Cyclades, on the opposite side of the Aegean. It has a maze of whitewashed lanes above the port, long beaches on the south coast and some of the best beach clubs in Greece.
Take the ferry
There is no direct ferry from Volos to Mykonos. Volos is the main departure point for the Sporades group and has no connection to the Cyclades ferry network. Getting there by sea means driving from Volos to Rafina, which takes around 3.5 to 4 hours via the E75 motorway and Athens ring road, and then taking the Rafina to Mykonos ferry, which runs up to 12 times daily in summer and takes around 2 to 2.5 hours on the fast catamaran. Rafina is around 25 kilometres from Athens Airport making it a convenient connection that avoids Piraeus entirely.
Getting there by air
Mykonos has an international airport with daily connections from Athens. Volos has a small airport at Nea Anchialos with limited connections from Athens. Driving from Volos to Athens and flying from Athens to Mykonos takes around 40 minutes on the second leg. Total journey time is around 4 to 5 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.
Your best option
Drive from Volos to Athens and fly from Athens to Mykonos. It is the fastest and most practical approach. Alternatively drive to Rafina and take the fast catamaran to Mykonos, which at around 2 to 2.5 hours is one of the most enjoyable Cyclades connections from the Athens area. If you are traveling with a car, drive to Piraeus for the conventional Piraeus to Mykonos ferry, which takes your vehicle directly to the New Port.
