Getting from Zakynthos to Thassos

If you are heading to Thassos from Zakynthos you are making your way from one of the most beautiful of the Ionian islands to the northernmost island in Greece, in the northern Aegean close to the Macedonian coast. It is green and forested with good beaches and ancient ruins from one of the most prosperous cities of the ancient Greek world.

Getting there by air

Thassos has no airport. The nearest airport is Kavala. Zakynthos has an international airport with connections from Athens. Flying from Zakynthos to Athens and then Athens to Kavala, followed by a taxi to the port and the ferry across to Thassos taking around 1 hour 30 minutes, gives a total journey time of around 6 to 7 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Zakynthos to Thassos. No Ionian island is connected by sea to any Aegean island. Thassos is connected only to Kavala and Keramoti on the northern mainland. Getting there by road means taking the ferry from Zakynthos to Kyllini and driving northeast via Patras, Athens and the E75 motorway to Kavala, which takes around 8 to 9 hours from Kyllini, and then taking the ferry across to Thassos.

Your best option

Fly from Zakynthos to Athens and then fly to Kavala, then take the ferry across to Thassos. With ferries running almost hourly from Kavala in summer you rarely need to book the final crossing in advance. It is the fastest and most practical approach. If you are traveling with a car, take the ferry from Zakynthos to Kyllini and drive northeast via Patras and Athens to Kavala, then take the ferry across to Thassos.
