Itinerary
The tour begins with pickup from your accommodation or preferred location on Naxos. From there, the journey heads inland to the Temple of Demeter, an important archaeological site dating back to the 6th century BC and one of the island’s most significant ancient monuments. Guests have time to explore the site and learn about its historical importance.
The next stop is a traditional pottery workshop in the village of Damalas, where visitors can observe local craftsmanship and learn about pottery-making techniques that have been passed down through generations. The tour then continues to Chalki, once the commercial center of Naxos, where guests visit the historic Vallindras Kitron Distillery and gain insight into the production of the island’s signature citrus liqueur.
After Chalki, the route passes through Filoti, the island’s largest mountain village, before continuing to Apeiranthos, a picturesque settlement known for its marble-paved streets, stone architecture, and traditional character. Guests have time to walk through the village and experience a different side of Naxos beyond its beaches and coastal resorts. The excursion concludes with the return journey to the original pickup location.
Who is this experience best for
This tour is ideal for travelers who want to explore the cultural and historical side of Naxos rather than focusing solely on beaches and coastal attractions. It is particularly well suited for first-time visitors, history enthusiasts, couples, families, and small groups seeking a private experience with local insight. The itinerary also appeals to those interested in traditional villages, local products, and authentic island life.
Insider notes
This experience involves several short walking stops through villages and archaeological areas, so comfortable footwear is recommended. The private format allows for a more flexible pace than larger group excursions, although stop durations are generally planned to fit within the five-hour schedule. On Tuesdays, when the Temple of Demeter may be closed, the itinerary may substitute an olive oil–related cultural stop instead. Bringing a camera is recommended, as the mountain villages offer some of the island’s most scenic views and traditional architecture.
