About the Beach
Kommos Beach is a vast and world-renowned coastal landmark located on the southern coast of Crete near Matala featuring a landscape of fine golden sand that once served as the ancient port for the Minoan palace of Phaistos in a protected environment that is both an archaeological site and a critical nesting ground for the Caretta-Caretta sea turtles providing a sense of immense scale and natural power where the northern end is famously preferred by naturists and the southern end offers a few traditional tavernas tucked into a landscape of shifting dunes and ancient cedar trees that have stood for centuries against the salt and wind of the Libyan Sea creating a dramatic and primitive coastal scene of international importance.
