About the Beach
Pounta Beach is a strategic and very convenient coastal stretch on the northwestern coast of Salamis, serving as the primary ferry terminal connecting the island to the mainland at Megara. It features a long shore of mixed sand and small pebbles with clear blue water that remains surprisingly clean despite the constant maritime traffic of the local landing craft. The beach is largely unorganized and maintains a raw, functional character, though it is surrounded by several traditional tavernas and small cafes that offer a comfortable spot for a quick dip while waiting for the boat. The surrounding landscape is industrial yet scenic, providing a unique view of the Saronic Gulf and the coastal mountains of Attica. The water is deep and fresh, offering an invigorating environment for a long swim in a setting that reflects the daily maritime life of the island. Access is exceptionally easy as it is the main entry point for vehicles and pedestrians arriving from the west. The entry into the water is via the smooth stones and the depth increases at a moderate pace. The atmosphere is local and busy, showing the authentic movement of the local residents. It is a practical choice for a first or last swim on the island.
