A$AP Rocky finally played Greece, and he did not exactly ease into it. On Sunday, October 11, the rapper brought his Don't Be Dumb World Tour to Telekom Center Athens for his first ever show in the country, and his signature entrance involved a helicopter. Welcome to Athens, Rocky.
The night was completely sold out. The venue says more than 14,000 people packed the arena, while To Vima put the crowd at around 15,000. Either way, that is a lot of people heading to Maroussi on a Sunday night.
Athens was not a random pin on the map, either. It was the closing stop of the European leg, which kicked off in Brussels in late August, and To Vima described it as the farewell night of the tour. A run of Australian dates in December is still to come, according to Athinorama, but Greece got the big European finale.
The tour supports Don't Be Dumb, which To Vima notes is his first full album in eight years. Earlier reporting from the same paper listed collaborators like Gorillaz, Tyler, The Creator, Jon Batiste and Thundercat, plus album artwork by Tim Burton. Casual.
The show itself sounds like an action movie. To Vima described the whole concert as one long chase: Rocky as a wanted fugitive, dancers in full SWAT gear hunting him across a stage built like a futuristic warship. Athinorama read the stage as a submarine. Either way, this was not your average rap set.
Then came the moment everyone was waiting for. A real helicopter hung from the ceiling, and Rocky climbed in to perform "HELICOPTER" from up there, as To Vima reported. Fans pulled off their white T-shirts and spun them over their heads like rotor blades. Truly iconic behavior from the Athens crowd.
Not every review was pure gushing. Athinorama noted that fans waited about an hour and a half for the show to start, and suggested the sheer scale of the production sometimes pulled focus from the intimacy. Still, the same review called him a unique showman it is impossible to feel indifferent about.
My favorite detail? Athinorama pointed out that the concert was announced almost quietly, sold out quietly, and then took over everyone's feeds in the days after. That is the Athens crowd in a nutshell: no fuss, they just show up.
Big international tours have not always made it to Greece, so a production this ambitious wrapping up its European run here feels like a statement. After Rocky's first visit, the bar for arena shows in Athens just got a lot higher.
