The wait is over. Giannis Antetokounmpo is making his regular-season debut for the Miami Heat on Wednesday night, as Miami opens its season at home against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Tip-off at Kaseya Center in Miami is set for 7:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN, which is 2:30 a.m. Thursday in Greece, so fans back home are in for a very late night. The NBA's official injury report lists him as available, and he is among Miami's projected starters alongside Bam Adebayo, Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins and Davion Mitchell.
It is his first official game since the Heat landed the two-time NBA MVP in a blockbuster July trade, sending four players, three first-round picks, a second-round pick and a pick swap to the Milwaukee Bucks for Giannis and forward Bobby Portis, as CBS Sports reported.
He wears No. 7 in Miami, and he already gave fans a preview with 20 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists in just 23 minutes of a preseason game against the Brooklyn Nets. "He's going to be able to do what he does, and that's what we want him to do. Be aggressive. Dominate the paint," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said on Sunday.
The opponent makes it even bigger. The Timberwolves have a shiny new star of their own in LaMelo Ball, who joins Anthony Edwards in Minnesota's backcourt and is also debuting for his new team, which is why ESPN picked this game to open its season coverage.
For Greece, this one is personal. Giannis was born and raised in Athens, grew up in the Sepolia neighborhood and plays for the Greek national team, so the whole country gets to claim a piece of this new chapter.
This story will be updated with the result when the game ends.
