Greek Community in Gjirokastër, Albania

Gjirokastër sits at the heart of what is historically known as Northern Epirus, home to the largest concentration of ethnic Greeks in Albania. The city and surrounding villages have maintained a Greek presence for centuries, with Greek Orthodox churches, Greek-language schools, and cultural associations continuing to serve the community today. Population estimates for the Greek minority in the Gjirokastër region vary significantly, from official Albanian figures in the low thousands to Greek government and diaspora estimates considerably higher, reflecting the same long-standing disagreement over how the minority is counted nationwide. Gjirokastër is also the birthplace of both former Albanian communist leader Enver Hoxha and Albania's Greek minority political movement, giving the city particular significance in the country's modern history.
