About The Event
Get a taste of the Hellenic Museum Summer School 2027 with this free talk by Summer School lecturer Dr Christopher Gribbin on Sunday 29 November 2026, 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, at the Hellenic Museum, 280 William Street, Melbourne, or online via Zoom. Were ancient Athenian women hidden away at home or active members of their community? The sources are limited, unreliable and contradictory, and archaeology and texts paint different pictures. Drawing on historians, legal cases, literature, vase painting and the remains of ancient houses, the 60-minute talk, with Q&A, explores what we can really know about the role and status of women in ancient Athens. Tickets are free, with an optional choose-what-you-pay contribution supporting future museum programs, and all attendees receive the Zoom replay.
