About The Event
On Thursday, December 3, 2026, at 7:00 PM, the Hellenic Centre in Marylebone, London, hosts Marina Sakali, Lady Marks, discussing her book The Uses of Oppression with Dr Şükrü Ilıcak, Associate Professor at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The book follows the Ottoman Greek press from its birth in 1830 until 1862, a period of radical social and political change that included the Tanzimat reforms. Through the reflections of editors, correspondents, advertisers, commentators and readers, it looks at the everyday lives of a generation of Ottoman Greeks: their social aspirations, their reactions to political events and their reception of Western-style norms. Presented in collaboration with the Anglo-Turkish Society. Booking required.
