Carpo: Greek Goddess of the Autumn Harvest

The Story of Carpo

Carpo was the goddess of the autumn harvest and ripening fruit. She was one of the Horae, the goddesses of the seasons, and a daughter of Zeus and Themis. Her name comes from the Greek word for fruit.

Carpo brought the fruit, grain and grapes of the year to ripeness and watched over the harvest gathered by grateful farmers. She was the last step in the cycle that her sister Thallo began each spring. In art the Horae appear as young women carrying the gifts of their seasons, and Carpo was the one with full baskets of fruit.

The Athenians honored Carpo together with Thallo as their two Horae, and the traveler Pausanias mentions their worship in Athens. Offerings were made to them so that the crops would grow and ripen at the right time. For the Greeks, she stood for the reward at the end of a year of hard work in the fields.
