Enyo: Greek Goddess of War and Destruction

The Story of Enyo

Enyo was a goddess of war, destruction and bloodshed. She was a close companion of Ares in battle, and different writers call her his sister, his mother or his daughter. Homer gives her the title sacker of cities.

Enyo had no interest in strategy or glory, only in the noise and slaughter of the fight. In the Iliad she leads the Trojans into battle together with Ares, bringing the shameless din of war while he strides alongside Hector with his giant spear. When Diomedes wounds Aphrodite, he mocks the love goddess for not being one of those who rule in war, like Athena or Enyo.

The Greeks saw Enyo as the terror of war itself rather than its skill, and she had little worship of her own. A statue of her stood in the temple of Ares in Athens, made by the sons of the sculptor Praxiteles. The Romans identified her with Bellona, their own goddess of war.
